Sunrise Scoop - January 2020

Sunrise Highlights

We are so grateful to all of our donors who make our mission possible.

Fourth Annual Sunrise Association Staff Conference

For the fourth year, staff from Sunrise Day Camp-Long Island, Pearl River, Staten Island,
Sunrise Israel, Horizon Day Camp-Baltimore, Aurora Day Camp-Altanta, and our newest camp, Sunrise Day Camp-Southern NJ/Greater Philadelphia, got together for our annual conference.

The theme this year was Because They Deserve It:  Achieving Excellence. Over the four days, 74 staff members took part in a collective quest for excellence – “to better ourselves, our work and our Association”.

And while the team may have benefitted personally from what was accomplished, in the end it will be the children and their families who derive the most benefit.

Because that’s what we do.  And more importantly, because that’s what they need.

Summer Dreams for Horizon Day Camp

On June 20th, Horizon Day Camp kicked off the summer camp season in style by hosting Summer Dreams, a benefit for Horizon Day Camp. The event welcomed 250+ guests and raised $325,000.

Horizon Day Camp honored Roberta and Greg Kahlert, of the Kahlert Foundation. Honorary Chairs included Roslyn and Len Stoler, Angie and Blake Cordish, and Shari and Jeffrey Aronson. The Cordish Family and The Cordish Companies were recognized as Dream Sponsors.

The evening featured remarks from volunteer and staff leadership, and the mother of Horizon Day Camp children. Musical entertainment included Noah and the Rainmakers. Noah is a drumming prodigy who was Horizon Day Camp’s first ever registered camper.

Summer Dreams was indeed a special celebration of Horizon Day Camp’s mission, community impact, and leadership extended by the philanthropic community.

Marc Eisenshtat Receives ‘Exceptional Service’ Award

Congratulations to Marc Eisenshtat, who was the recipient of the 2019 Northwestern Mutual’s – Eastern Regional “Most Exceptional Service Award” which came with a $30,000 gift for the Sunrise Association.

In 2016, Marc became involved with Sunrise when close friends were affected by pediatric cancer. His first event was SunriseWALKS, where he raised over $6,000. Following the WALK, Marc connected several Northwestern Mutual offices with Sunrise. They donated $24,000, which was raised at a golf outing – making them one of the top sponsorships of the 2019 SunriseWALKS-Long Island. Additionally, Marc and the Farmingdale office created their own 2019 SunriseWALKS team and raised approximately $19,000.

Thank you, Marc, for your dedication to the Sunrise Association.

Operation Got Your Back

For her mitzvah project, Janelle Ash founded and created Operation Got Your Back otherwise known as O:GB. In her own words, “O:GB isn’t just a brand; it’s a platform for doing good. The idea is to put others first, supporting kids who need someone to lift them up. We’ve got their backs!”

Janelle designed a one of a kind hoodie which she is selling online, and on Instagram with 100% of the purchase price benefiting the Sunrise Association.  Janelle has already raised nearly $15,000!

If you’re interested in supporting Sunrise and O:GB, please go to Operation Got Your Back and purchase a beautiful hoodie today!

SunriseWALKS 2019 Inspires Thousands

This past October, SunriseWALKS completed its 14th campaign year with HorizonWALKS in Baltimore and SunriseWALKS-Pearl River.

Baltimore hosted 300+ walkers who braved the rain in Halloween costumes raising over $175,000.

Pearl River boasted its personal best with approximately 800 walkers raising $246,000. And while all SunriseWALKS events are celebrations, this year Pearl River had a special celebration for Alex, our Pearl River Walk Ambassador. Alex was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoblstic Lymphoma just after his 4th birthday.  This year, Alex celebrated his 7th birthday at SunriseWALKS – cancer free and in remission—on stage while everyone sang a very special Sunrise happy birthday to him. Read more about Alex’s story here.

To learn more about SunriseWALKS or get involved, please contact Aileen Hoffman.

American Amusement Machine Association Supports Sunrise Association

The Sunrise Association was honored to receive a check for $30,000 in support of our programs from the American Amusement Museum Charity Foundation (AAMCF), the charitable arm of the American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA). The AAMCF has donated nearly $2 million to children’s charities across the globe. Special thanks to our dear friend Allen Weisberg, CEO of Apple Industries for introducing us to this very generous community and to AAMCF President, David Cohen for his enthusiastic support.
